Quilmes Neighbourhood, just south of Buenos Aires

Argentina is celebrating 200 years of independence and the Bicentenary Plaza has been opened in Quilmes, a neighbourhood just south of Buenos Aires, to commemorate this national celebration. The plaza is a social focus for local residents where they can enjoy long walks or spend a romantic afternoon with a loved-one in the shade of a tree. Bicentenary Plaza – also known as Plaza Bi – was refurbished and renamed two years ago in time for the bicentenary celebrations transforming not just the plaza, but also the surrounding area.

In adjoining neighbourhoods, there are currently 30 different property development projects that are either near completion or underway. Land and property values are going up and up, as the whole zone becomes more and more popular. According to Buenos Aires real estate experts, land that was worth $400 per m2 just a few years ago is now worth around $800. The location that is most sought after is of course found in the area that surrounds Plaza Bi, which has also come to be known as a separate neighbourhood in it its own right. Some people are even calling the area Quilmes Hollywood, which certainly reflects the exclusivity and popularity of this new quarter.

The residential feel and sense of safety and comfort that the area offers make it is so attractive. The pedestrianised shopping area along Rivadavia is only four blocks away. Plus, the plaza is only seven blocks from Quilmes railway station and has motorway access just 1.5km away, providing residents with easy access to La Plata and Buenos Aires city centre.

All of the buildings in this area are top of the range developments that boast the best facilities. For example, Colón Palace, a thirteen-storey structure that has all the latest mod-cons including; walk-in wardrobes; en suite spa bathrooms; ample garden space; lighted and heated swimming pool; gym; sauna and sundeck.

The services in the area are also being improved to meet the demand of these high-tech properties. The Argentina water board, Aysa, is enhancing the sewage and potable water system, as the current population of 250,000 is sure to increase in the coming years.

Quilmes is an area of Argentina that is rich in history. It was originally a settlement for Indians who were forcefully brought from Tucuman in the North of the country. The area has since been the scene for illegal smuggling of goods and slaves, the site where the British invaders landed in 1806 and where the famous Quilmes brewery was established in 1890. It will be interesting to see what other developments and dramas will unfold here in the next 200 years…
